Most attorneys are not informational technology (IT) experts, although increasingly we are called upon to be knowledgeable of the basics of IT so as to properly advise and counsel our clients.
This is particularly the case when so many IT problems having legal implications today are prevalent --- and increasing.
The following are some brief tips to help the typical lawyer and the typical client maneuver through some basic IT issues.:
1. CYBERSECURITY is a problem that lawyers and their clients should be aware of. It sounds exotic but it is a very serious issue that we must deal with constantly in this modern IT environment.
2. OVERSHARING ON SOCIAL MEDIA of our private information can make it easier for others to collect and seize our assets as well as our identity I will not name the major social outlets, but you know who they are.
3. ENCRYPTION sounds exciting but it is not enough to perfectly protect the privacy of your information. It is a good start, though, for data privacy.
4. EMAIL is very popular these days but it is hardly the most secure method to handle business. Paper documents, telephone, and face-to-face meeting can still be useful business communication tools.
5. eDISCOVERY is here and popular in litigation, but its use does not mean that clients should collect and keep evry piec of information generated .
