MASSACHUSETTS MOTRIN CASE: $63 MILLION VERDICT --- Too much? Too little?

www.CharlesJeromeWare.com

A Plymouth County, Massachusetts jury has awarded a $63 million verdict against Johnson & Johnson pharmaceutical company to a teenage girl and her parents after the girl suffered, at age 7, a life-threatening drug reaction when she took Children's Motrin ten years ago.

The girl's adverse reaction to the over-the-counter pain reliever drug included blindness, permanent brain and lung damage, loss of most of the skin on her body, followed by permanent scarring.

The Motrin drug manufacturer, Johnson & Johnson and its McNeil-PPC Ins. subsidiary could pay the girl, Samantha Reckis, and her parents a total of $109 million once the court adds interest, if the jury's decision is upheld.

This most recent case is similar to a Pennsylvania case (which we previously reported on) in which a girl was awarded $10 million in 2011. She, too, suffered an adverse reaction to Children's Motrin, causing her to lose 84 percent of her skin, suffer permanent brain damage and blindness.
