The number of women arrested for drunk driving in Maryland has increased by about 20% since 2003, according to statistics compiled by the FBI and the Traffic Injury Research Foundation. For instance, FBI data reports that between 2003 and 2012 annual  DUI arrests among women in the United States increased from 174,000  to  211,000 --- a  21%  increase nationwide.  In contrasr, DUI arrests among men declined by nearly 17 % nationally from 780,000 to 650,000.

Some of the analyses presented at the 2014 Michigan Traffic Safety Summit give the following reasons, among others, for this increased female DUI arrests : (1) more women in the workforce, so women are driving more miles and driving at night when they are likely to be arrested for drunk driving; (2) it is more socially acceptable for women to drink in public than it used to be --- particularly young women; (3) elimination of many first-offender diversion programs, so more women are being pushed through the criminal justice system; (4) increased stress on women for a variety of reasons  such as jobs, relationship issues, depression, anxiety; (5) and, of course, biological and physiological differences between men and women. Quite simply, women metabolize alcohol differently than me do and they do it in such a way that they are going to get more intoxicated more quickly than men of the same weight, et al.
